Emily Hall awarded 2024 Trimble Karahipi Hangarau/Technology Scholarship: Financially fantastic.

“This scholarship means I can focus on my study and completing job applications; be involved in the industry; start an internship and really get myself work-ready. It's fantastic!”

Starting at the Victoria University of Wellington in 2021, Emily has finished her Bachelor of Architectural Studies undergraduate degree, and is now in the first of two years studying a Master of Architecture (Professional).

Emily says she had a great interview with Trimble and really enjoyed meeting all the interviewees, and that it was great working with our Talent Acquisition Professional Freya Wilson.

“I felt I already had a connection with Trimble, I grew up using SketchUp! My dad was an engineer and used it for his work so he taught me really early on. I think it's the most intuitive 3D modelling software around. As a kid, I used to constantly redesign my bedroom, design houses and dream about being an architect”.

“At High School I studied Design and Visual Communication so that at University, I was already ahead and even though it was a hard year, it really helped having those drawing and modelling skills. At uni, I’m glad that I enjoy a wide range of subjects, from design classes to contract law and business. I love that architecture lets you learn about so many things”.

“At one point I thought, should I be an artist instead?, but then I realised, I love STEM subjects!”.

It’s that mixture of creative and practical that appeals to Emily, she enjoyed Maths and Physics at school but also the design classes, so Architecture gave her the best of both worlds. “I’ve yet to find a part I don't like,” she says.

Emily says the scholarship came at the right time - she had nothing to spare.  It meant she could focus on what's next.  And apart from her thesis next year, she has signed up for an internship at a Wellington firm of architects - Designgroup Stapleton Elliot. She’s excited to be going there as they work on a variety of projects, residential, commercial, health, education - big and small projects.

Emily has a few credits under her belt already, being a winner of the NZ Institute of Building Next Gen Award.

This year she thinks she has her work/life balance sorted better than ever, she volunteers as the VUW President of SANNZ (Student Architecture Network of NZ) - focussing on events that connect students to the industry, including high school students. She will also work on helping to plan the 2026 Ground Matters Australiasian Student Architecture Congress.

What drives Emily? She wants to help make building more sustainable and accessible for everyone to own their own home. Her thesis for 2025 focuses on modular prefabrication and circular building practices.

So it's all coming together for Emily, all those years of playing on SketchUp, dreaming of being an architect!

We are so happy to support you Emily, best wishes for an exciting future.
