Te Karira Ruakere-Norris awarded the 2024 Trimble Karahipi Hangarau/Technology Scholarship in partnership with the University of Auckland
Trimble is thrilled to announce the deserving recipient of our 2024 Trimble Karahipi Hangarau/Technology Scholarship in partnership with the University of Auckland—Te Karira Ruakere-Norris!
Te Karira, a bright and driven third-year Bachelor of Urban Planning student at the University of Auckland, embodies the spirit of innovation and the powerful blending of perspectives that Trimble values. Growing up in Whangarei, Te Karira was deeply influenced by his Nana's work in Māori planning, igniting a passion for integrating Te Ao Māori worldviews into planning and decision-making processes. His early recognition of the critical need to bridge Māori and European perspectives to achieve equitable outcomes in the public sector has fueled his academic pursuits. The moment an urban planner visited his high school, Te Karira saw a clear pathway to combine his interests in culture, law, geography, history, and people. His studies are now focused on tackling vital questions for Aotearoa's future, such as: What should the future city look like for all New Zealanders? How can public transport effectively serve diverse regions like Northland? How can digital technology enhance our daily lives while promoting transparency and understanding of Māori issues for all stakeholders—envisioning possibilities like integrated HOP cards and debit cards, and 3D planning for enhanced risk assessment? Currently immersed in exploring the delivery of Māori planning issues at a district-wide scale, Te Karira is thoughtfully considering diverse perspectives on the impact of climate change, water, land, and family dynamics on our built environment. While acknowledging the potential gap between academic ideals and real-world application, his determination to drive meaningful change is truly inspiring. The Trimble Karahipi Hangarau/Technology Scholarship provided Te Karira with crucial support, enabling him to spend valuable time with his whānau last summer and plan for flatting this year, allowing him to focus more intently on his studies and future contributions. Congratulations, Te Karira! We at Trimble are incredibly proud to support your journey and look forward to witnessing the positive impact you will undoubtedly have on shaping the future of Aotearoa. We're excited to follow your progress!
